What is a Xolo?

"What kind of dog is that?"

We get this question every time we leave the house with our Xolos and love having the opportunity to introduce new people to this wonderful breed.

An ancient, regal breed

Xoloitzcuintli is a dog breed that dates back over 3,500 years. They are historically connected to the Aztecs and were considered sacred spirit guides. They are known for their hairless varieties, but also come coated, and in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. They are a rare dog breed with an estimated 30,000 in the world today.

How do you pronounce that?

It sounds like “show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee”. Many people lovingly call them Xolos ("show-lows"). They're also known as Mexican hairless dogs, which can be deceiving because Xolos come in a coated variety.

What are Xolos like?

Each Xolo is unique, and you can read any number of dog breed websites that explain common Xoloitzcuintli characteristics. We know our Xoloitzcuintlis to have so much personality, they really are unique characters. We find our Xolos to be loyal, alert, loving, attentive, charming, engaging, playful, intelligent, and very friendly.  Our Xolos are gentle and patient with our entire household including our kids, other dogs, cats, and farm animals. They are considered a primitive breed which means they are a very old breed that can exhibit ancient characteristics.

"Have you seen that Disney Pixar movie, Coco?"

Most people don't know what a Xolo is, but many people have seen the Disney Pixar movie, Coco. Dante, the goofy, lovable, brave, and heroic sidekick and spirit guide to the movie's main character, is a Xoloitzcuintli.
